This website is a project created by the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a non-profit organization that focuses on civil rights issues. The site provides educational resources for grades K-12 that seek to address the development of inclusive and equitable classrooms and school communities. The classroom activities tab provides lesson plan outlines according to grade level and subject area. These activities combine subject specific material with real world relevance. The lessons focus on a variety of issues including equity, bias, racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, respect, and tolerance. All of the needed materials and procedures are provided. There are also resources provided for professional development that address a wide range of topics such as culturally responsive teaching, assessment of school climate, bullying, culture in the classroom, differentiated instruction, and family engagement. Other resources on this site include free Teaching Tolerance teaching kits, and access to a free online magazine that addresses diversity and equity.
This resource is extremely useful for finding lessons that incorporate justice and diversity within a specific subject area. This can be particularly difficult for math and science curriculum, and I am impressed by the lessons that are provided in these areas. These lessons can be scaffolded with extra academic material and background if needed or desired. There are also a number of professional development resources that provide guidance on how to make any curriculum accessible, inclusive, culturally responsive, and engaging to the students. I could absolutely infuse these resources into a science curriculum to create a more diverse and relevant science experience for my students. Lastly, the professional development resources also provide valuable information and strategies that I can use in my classroom to address intolerant behaviors such as bias, racism, sexism, and exclusion.
